With NFL Draft preps in full swing, many scouts and draftniks are busy dissecting tape. That same process is in place here at Steelers 101, as we are not only focusing on the potential selections for the Pittsburgh Steelers, we are also working along side our sister site On The Clock 101 to develop comprehensive draft content.
One of our first pieces for On The Clock 101 was a profile of a player we identified as a potential out of the box / best player available (BPA) selection in the first round of the draft for the Steelers, Notre Dame tight end Tyler Eifert. The tight end position has become a hot commodity in the league and determining who the top rated player at that position will be an interesting subject as the combine and draft nears, especially considering the injury to Heath Miller and overall lack of depth on the roster. He is rated as the top tight end by many draft services and at 6-5, 250-pounds, has the size to be an asset to any offense. Known more as a receiver in college (140 receptions for 1,840 yards and 11 touchdowns), he is an improving in-line blocker.
More importantly for some teams he fits the mold of the hybrid tight end that is becoming all the rage. He is skilled at multiple positions inside, in the backfield, split out wide as a receiver. It will be interesting to see his official measurables from the combine or workouts as he could be a strong Red Zone target for some team including the Steelers.
