Kevin Colbert and Mike Tomlin have already started picking up the pieces from the disappointing 2012 campaign by looking toward the future. Today, the team, started the arduous offseason by signing six players to futures contracts.
Every offseason, this process signals the start of building the eventual 53-man roster. While many of these players never make the final cut, there is always a chance. Five of the six signees were familiar to the Steelers, having spent some time on the 2012 practice squad at various points. Those five are cornerback Isaiah Green (Fresno State), offensive linemen Joe Long (Wayne State) and Justin Cheadle (California), and wide receivers Bert Reed (Florida State) and Derek Moye (Penn State). The sixth player signed was Chartiers Valley native Ross Ventrone. Ventrone, saw time with the New England Patriots in parts of 2010 and 2011 after signing as an undrafted rookie free agent out of Villanova.
Reserve/Futures contracts are used to sign players for the 2013 season, although that season does not officially start until sometime in March when the official league year begins. Only players who were not on any NFL team’s active roster when the 2012 season ended were on practice squads at the end of the season are eligible to sign these contracts
