The Pittsburgh Steelers made a roster move Friday, when they released second-year tight end Weslye Saunders, who was returning from his four-game substance abuse suspension.
For many, the move seemed to be unexpected, as the athletic tight end had an upside to develop opposite Heath Miller. Signed as an undrafted rookie free agent in 2011 out of South Carolina, Saunders excited in minimal appearances recording four receptions and one touchdown as a rookie. With the release of Saunders, the Steelers will move forward with veteran Leonard Pope and rookie seventh-round selection David Paulson at tight end behind Miller.
