The 2012 incarnation of the Pittsburgh Steelers have at times become a difficult team to follow. Honestly, fans have no idea what to be frustrated about. One game, the defense is erratic and cannot stop itself, the next, it is the offense that looks inept and out of sync. However, if fans played close attention, there has been on constant on both sides of the ball, penalties.
That’s right, the once physical and smash-mouth franchise has morphed into the modern version of the Oakland Raiders in the penalty arena. One look at Sunday’s game against the Eagles and this trend is quite evident.Defensively, personal fouls to safeties Ryan Clark and Ryan Mundy aided touchdown drives, pass interference calls kept drives alive and that was in one game. On offense, the infractions may not be as magnified, but holding calls on first down debilitate drives. It was so bad on Sunday, on twitter fans were wondering if Chris Kemoeatu was back in the fold. In all, the team recorded nine penalties for 106 yards against the Eagles.
While some may say that was an enigma, it is not. In the Steelers 4 games, they have now recorded 37 penalties for 346 yards worth of infractions; an incredible average of 9.25 penalties for 86.5 yards per game, and yes that is more than the rushing yardage per game average in 2012.
