Loading ...The Pittsburgh Steelers and Philadelphia Eagles took all 60 minutes to figure out who would win. In this tight battle, the game was not decided until the final seconds where Steelers kicker Shaun Suisham connected on his third field goal of the game from 34-yards out to give the Steelers a 16-14 victory.
On the drive, the Steelers used a solid combination of run and pass to set up a 13-yard Rashard Mendenhall touchdown scamper. This 12-play 75-yard drive took 7:21 off the clock and looked like the offense fans have seen throughout the early part of the season.
After a defensive stop, the Steelers offense continued to get into sync with another no-huddle drive. The 12-play 77-yard drive took 2:28 off the clock and was capped off by a Shaun Suisham 20-yard field goal with six seconds left in the half to extent the lead to 10-0.
The Eagles got on the board midway through the third quarter as Vick hit running back LaSean McCoy for a 15-yard touchdown to pull the Eagles within a field goal at 10-7. The score capped an eight-play 80-yard drive that took 3:50 off the clock.
The Steelers opened scoring in the fourth quarter with a 34-yard kick from Suisham to extend the lead to 13-7. The field goal capped a nine-play 51-yard drive that took over four minutes off the clock. The Eagles came back and took the lead 14-13 in the fourth quarter on a second Vick touchdown pass. This, two-yard toss to tight end Brent Celek closed a 17-play 79-yard drive (8:18) that saw the Eagles convert on fourth down twice.
The Steelers took over after that touchdown with 6:33 remaining and used every second to take a 16-14 lead and victory with Suisham capping the 14-play 64-yard drive that was predicated on the running game and critical short passes.
The biggest news of the game was injuries to the Steelers defense with Troy Polamalu (calf) and linebacker LaMarr Woodley (hamstring) leaving the game and not returning. With the Steelers having a short week, it will be interesting to track their status as the week moves on.
Offensively, the Steelers showed a running game, topping the 100-yard mark for the first time in 2012. The team got a huge boost from Mendenhall, who looked at home in the new offense in his return from ACL surgery. In all, he finished with 14-carries for 81-yards and one touchdown and tacked on two receptions for 2-yards.
Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger was up-and-down completing 21-of-37 passes for 207 yards. Antonio Brown led the receiving corps with seven receptions for 86 yards, including some big grabs down the stretch. The Steelers needed bug contributions from Brown and tight end Heath Miller (Four grabs for 41-yards) as wide receiver Mike Wallace disappeared from the attack and had some critical drops.
Defensively, the Steelers had some moments, holding the explosive Eagles offense in check. In all, they recorded three sacks (Ziggy Hood, Jason Worilds and Steve McClendon) and forced two turnovers.
