STEELERS 101

Last week, the Pittsburgh Steelers spent their bye week stewing over the egg they laid against the Oakland Raiders. This week, they have a match-up against the talented Philadelphia Eagles (3-1) as the look to even their record at 2-2.

Offensively, the Steelers are still searching for a consistent push in the running game. Neither starter Isaac Redman nor primary back-up Jonathan Dwyer has been spectacular, although Dwyer has ran with power and speed in his limited action. This week, the team may look to get a boost from Rashard Mendenhall, who looks to suit up for the first time in 2012.

At the helm, quarterback Ben Roethlisberger will look to continue his early season success. Sure, there have been some up-and-down moments, but he is playing better that ever and looks in total control of the offense. Couple his solid play, with clearly the most distinguished part of the offense, the receiving corps, and the Steelers should be able to take advantage of some favorable match-ups on the back end.

With wide receivers Antonio Brown and Mike Wallace and tight end Heath Miller looking better each week in this new system, they could get more chances this week against Eagles defensive backfield. In addition, fans should keep an eye on running back Chris Rainey, who could be in line for an expanded role for the first time this season.

In week three, the offensive line had a decent game, but more importantly, they finished rather healthy. This week, they will be challenged by an attacking Eagles defense that causes match-up issues.  They are a defense that does have athleticism, speed, and physicality and excels at pressuring the offensive tackles with their wide-nine base.

Defensively, the Steelers need to continue the physical and punishing demeanor they displayed for three quarters against the New York Jets in week two. That being said, it will be imperative for the Steelers to get off the field on third down and create a turnover or two. To accomplish this, it appears that the Steelers will have both James Harrison and Troy Polamalu in the line up.
