It appears that the early bye week for the Pittsburgh Steelers will pay dividends this season, as for the first time in 2012; the team appears to be healthy.
While their Sunday match-up with the Philadelphia Eagles is still days away, there is a good chance the safety Troy Polamalu, running back Rashard Mendenhall and even linebacker James Harrison could be in uniform. For Mendenhall and Harrison, it would be their first action since suffering knee injuries. Even the coaching staff seems optimistic about their potential return, as head coach Mike Tomlin quantified their return as a “safe assessment,” during his weekly press conference according to KDKA.Of the three, Mendenhall’s return could give the struggling running game the biggest boost. The former first-round selection has the ability when healthy to be the most overall dynamic back out of the backfield, and should be a great fit in offensive coordinator Todd Haley’s scheme.
That is by no means discounting the impact of Harrison and Polamalu to a struggling defense. While back-up safety Ryan Mundy and linebacker Chris Carter have been solid, they in no way have the same experience or abilities of the players they are replacing.
