As fans and media waited for Mike Wallace to return to the organization (He is expected Tuesday), Monday was also the day that NFL teams were required to reduce their rosters to 75 players. The Pittsburgh Steelers followed suit by releasing 15 players prior to the leagues deadline.
Of the players released only two come as a mild surprise at this point in camp linebacker Mortty Ivy (waived/injured) and recently signed tight end Justin Peelle. If Ivy clears waivers, it is possible that he could return to the team on the season ending injured reserve list. The other players released were wide receivers Paul Cox, Jimmy Young and Juamorris Stewart, defensive tackles Mike Blanc and Kade Weston, cornerbacks Walter McFaddon and Andre Freeman, Linebacker Ryan Baker, Kicker Daniel Hrapmann, Offensive lineman Kyle Jolly, Long snapper Matt Katula, Tight end Jamie McCoy and Safety Myron Rolle.
The Steelers made another roster move when they claimed running back DuJuan Harris off waivers from the Jacksonville Jaguars. Originally an undrafted rookie free agent from Troy, the 5-7, 196 pound (reported 4.44 speed) Harris saw limited action in 2011 with the Jaguars, averaging 22.0 yards-per-return on kickoffs and notching nine carries for 42-yards.
All NFL franchises will be required to reduce their rosters to 53 by Friday evening, and the Steelers will have some interesting decisions to make. One of those decisions could become a lot clearer after rookie offensive guard David DeCastro undergoes surgery on his knee Wednesday. Today, the team announced that they have not made a decision on his status at this time.
