The Pittsburgh Steelers returned to the practice field today and seemed to open the playbook some with more passing drills visible throughout the afternoon. More importantly, the team also made some progress on the injury front, where cornerback Keenan Lewis returned to action and tight end Heath Miller inched closer to a return. The same can be said for safety Damon Cromartie-Smith, who is expected to be activated from the physically unable to perform list (PUP) on Wednesday.

The team also started to create some position flexibility on defense by rotating inside linebackers Stevenson Sylvester and Mortty Ivy at outside linebacker in place of James Harrison and Jason Worilds who remain on the PUP list. For Sylvester, the addition of position flexibility could be huge as he tries to solidify a roster spot, especially with veteran outside linebacker Brandon Johnson taking reps at inside linebacker.

The Steelers also made a roster move on Tuesday by releasing offensive tackle Bridger Buche, and signing undrafted rookie free agent wide receiver Paul Cox from Mississippi Valley State University. The 6-4, 203-pound wide receiver with a  timed 4.57 40-yard dash started the offseason by signing with the San Diego Chargers after the draft.

While he was not as accomplished as former alum HOF wide receiver Jerry Rice, Cox had a solid stay at the university, completing his four-year career with over 1,700 yards receiving and 13 touchdowns, including his senior season where he recorded 36 receptions for 619 yards and 3 touchdowns.

Cox may be a new addition into training camp, but another undrafted rookie free agent wide receiver is opening some eyes, wide receiver Marquise Maze. Standing 5-8, and weighing 187 pounds, Maze may eventually struggle outside and be limited to the slot, but he understands route running and has solid hands (especially for a slot receiver).

One injury note, rookie cornerback Terry Carter injured his hamstring and will need to be evaluated.
