While there is still a form of optimism within the Steelers organization that they will sign wide receiver Mike Wallace before the regular season, it doesn’t look like they will get him into training camp until the deal is done.According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Wallace wasn’t going to show up at the required 4 p.m reporting time at St. Vincent College. Schefter reports that currently the sides aren’t even close on the new deal.
There had been some reports earlier in the week that Wallace had re-signed with the team, but it turned out to be false. The Steelers so far have shown good faith in dealing with Wallace by not reducing his $2.7 million free-agent tender when they had the chance to last month. They have also given him Todd Haley’s new playbook so that he wouldn’t fall behind.
The Steelers want to get this deal done, and as history would show this isn’t usually how they handle these situations. The only questions that are left how long will this hold-out last and what will it take to get done. The Steelers have already talked about going with Emmanuel Sanders in Wallace’s place until he returns according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
To update the situation ESPN's John Clayton has reported that The Steelers have broken off talks with Wallace. Steelers don't plan to open negotiations back up with Wallace until he reports to camp. Fans should stay tuned.
