The Pittsburgh Steelers have completed their rookie mini-camp with the signing of two draft picks. Yesterday, Steelers101 reported that the teams inked fourth round selection NT Alameda Ta’amu to a four-year contract and the team followed that signing by coming to terms with fifth round selection Chris Rainey on a four-year deal.

Signing Rainey at this juncture is a solid move, as he looks to be an integral part of Todd Haley’s offense, projected to be used by Haley in the same manner as his former Kansas City Chiefs RB Dexter McCluster.  Rainey is a small 5-8, 180 pounds, but extremely versatile and explosive athlete that has the ability to make an impact on both offense and special teams. In fact, he may have the most natural explosion with the ball in his hands of any player in this draft. During his career at Florida, he split time between multiple positions and looks the part of a natural receiver and change-of-pace back in the NFL. More importantly for teams, he was also a special teams dynamo at Florida school and SEC records with six blocked punts over his career on top of his return skills.

With Rainey in the fold, it should help the Steelers moving forward as he can learn the offense as a wide receiver and allow him to focus on the return game once training camp starts.
