Pittsburgh Steelers fans across the globe in SteelerNation say it all the time, when will the Steelers add some size to their receiving corps. In looking at it, they have not had a tall big-play receiver since Plaxico Burris left (yes, they tried with Limus Sweed and you see where that ended up). The Steelers must have been listening by plucking two receivers with some size during the draft season, amazingly both with some local ties.
First, the team drafted Colorado wide receiver Toney Clemons in the seventh round. Clemons, a New Kensington native, is hoping to build upon a solid pro-day and rise up draft boards, where the 6-2, 210 pound wide out blistered the 40-yard dash with a laser-timed 4.36.
They followed that with one of the more intriguing undrafted free agent signings in Duquesne wide receiver Connor Dixon. While Dixon was not noticed by many scouting services, Dixon has quietly opened some as his pro-day workout, especially considering he is still developing as a wide receiver.
The athletic 6-5, 220 pound wide out has a solid combination of natural skills and football intelligence, starting his college career at Michigan State, after being a highly recruited quarterback prospect from South Park High School (Pittsburgh). After transferring to Duquesne, and suffering through some injuries, he made the transition to wide receiver in 2010 where is hands and athleticism took over. Raw as a receiver with only two full seasons in the fold, he lacks polish in his route running and is honing his craft.
In the end, he is definitely a long shot to make the squad, but he has a chance. A receiver with that size and the ability to push out a 4.4 40-yard dash (reportedly), could be a match-up nightmare, and with some coaching to help develop his natural talents, he may be able to develop into a undrafted gem.
As we have done throughout this draft process profiling prospects, Steelers101 will continue by profiling all 12 undrafted rookie free agents. Below is a list of players we have completed with the profiles hyperlinked and date completed.
