The Pittsburgh Steelers finally addressed something other than their offensive line with the selection of LB Sean Spence from Miami (FLA) in the third round of the 2012 NFL Draft.
Spence has been a bright spot for the Hurricanes during his career and was a four-year starter. Smaller than prototypical linebackers at 5-11, 231 pounds, he is a playmaker with outstanding instincts and solid athleticism. The biggest knock on him is his size, had he been closer to the prototypical size for linebackers, he would have been selected a lot earlier. While we are not positive, the Steelers may see him as an athletic inside linebacker with coverage ability.
In the end, it appears that the Steelers grabbed an explosive linebacker that has the ability to diagnose, react and make an impact. He was a late riser, and should be a solid addition to the Steelers defense and special teams.
